BÂRSANA MONASTERY
BÂRSANA, MARAMUREȘ
The Bârsana Monastery is one of the landmarks in Maramureș. The reason is both the beautiful church inside the complex and the rest of the wooden buildings made by folk craftsmen from Maramureș.
The church of the Bârsana monastery is one of the highest wooden churches in Romania, having a height of 57m. Also in Bârsana there is a second church that is part of the UNESCO world heritage.
The ensemble of the Bârsana monastery consists of: the new Church of the Monastery ("the Cathedral of the 12 Apostles"), the Summer Altar, the Aghiasmatar, the abbot, the house of the nuns, the priest's house, the bell tower and the museum.
The monastic complex was built of wood, according to local tradition. The church is built of horizontally assembled beams and is rectangular in plan, with a two-level porch on the west and a polygonal altar apse. On the inside, the polygonal arch section, on consoles, and on the outside, there are the porches with arches on carved pillars and pierced parapets.
All the buildings in the monastery complex from Bârsana were built in the popular Maramureş style. The interior of the monastery is very neat, so a visit here will surely please you.
