THE MERRY CEMETERY
SĂPÂNȚA, MARAMUREȘ
The Merry Cemetery The Merry Cemetery in Săpânța is the place where, contrary to popular culture, death is not treated with sadness and mourning, but with cheerful eyes
The epitaphs on the crosses in the Merry Cemetery are meant to keep alive and unaltered the memory of the deceased, but in a transparent and humorous way, to be a reason to smile for those who visit the cemetery.
The wood used to carve the crosses is exclusively oak. Immediately after cutting, the wood is processed and left to dry for 4-5 years. Only after the wood has dried very well, the actual carving begins.
The colors used in the Merry Cemetery in Săpânța are bright and intense, and the color specific to the area, called "Săpânța Blue", is the background color for all the crosses.
Although no one normally wants to visit a cemetery, we think this one should not be crossed off the list.
